Colour Project

Today was the first day of our colour project with Blandine Lelong. In brief, we had to analyse the colour palettes of the designers we saw yesterday at Maison et Object and categorise them. They fell into 6 main categories-

1. BRIGHT BLOCKS - Which consisted of brands with radical, saturated colours such as Panetone

2. CHILDRENS - Bright, contrasting Children's colours often with graphic motifs

3. RETRO - Nostalgic palettes of times gone by

4. KITCH/ORIENTAL - Those with reference to popular objects and/or a foreign influence

5. LIMITED PALETTE - A poetic, harmonious choice of colour, often with a feminine feel

6. NATURALS- Organic, undyed, minimal colours

Here's an image of the organised chaos!

Next we had to study colour development in bedlinen/ table linen etc. by looking through old catalogues and comparing colour palettes. We had to analyse these changes in detail. I had bed linen from popular french companies, e.g. Biocolore and Best De La Redoute from 2003 to 2010.

To be perfectly honest the results were pretty much just as I had expected and the exercise itself seemed fairly obvious. The bright, garish citrusy colours of 2003 gradually got replaced by more elegant greys and browns with a far more upmarket feel to them. As homework we have to analyse the colour palettes of two textile brands with regards to their target audience, etc etc.

So far the teaching seems a lot more like school. We all have to complete simple little tasks then report back. I can't imagine ever doing anything quite like this at Chelsea!
